RUSSIA – BARBADOS
The diplomatic relations between Russia and Barbados were established on January 29, 1993.
The countries maintain political contacts, cooperate in UN and other international organizations. Barbados is becoming a popular destination for Russian tourists.
Bilateral trade is constantly growing. In 2011 it equaled US $ 628,6 mln.
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to the Cooperative Republic of Guyana H.E. Nikolay D.Smirnov is the non-resident Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Barbados.
On the meeting of Russian Ambassador and Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Barbados
On May 3, 2014 Ambassador of Russia (Non-Resident) to Barbados H.E.Nikolay Smirnov met with Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Barbados Mr.Charles Burnett.
H.E.Nikolay Smirnov informed Mr.Burnett of the recent visit of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia Sergey Lavrov to Cuba, Nicaragua, Peru and Chile during which various areas of bilateral cooperation were discussed including training of antinarcotics forces, in the areas of outer space technologies, peaceful use of nuclear energy, health care, agricultural studies, cooperation between higher education institutions and student programs.
Due to the recent developments of the situation in Ukraine Ambassador in detail explained Russia’s position on the ongoing political crises in that country and stressed importance of finding soon resolution by peaceful means to prevent further escalation of violence. In this regard Ambassador drew Mr.Burnett’s attention to the Permanent Representative of Russia Mr.Vitaly Churkin’s speech at the UN Security Council on May 2, 2014.
During discussion of bilateral relations Ambassador pointed out Russia’s assistance to the Small Island Developing States in holding the upcoming Summit of SIDS in Samoa, cooperation between Russia and Barbados in the area of training anti-narcotic police officers in Russia as well as prospects of bilateral visa free agreement.
On the meeting of Russian Ambassador and Honourable Maxine Mc Clean, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of Barbados
H.E. Nikolay Smirnov, Ambassador of the Russian Federation (Non-Resident) to Barbados and Honourable Maxine Mc Clean, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of Barbados met on February 12, 2014 to discuss bilateral issues.
During the meeting bilateral agreements, including avoiding double taxation, cooperation in the area of human resource development, training of Barbadian police officers in Russia was also discussed.
Ambassador informed Madam Minister of the objectives and priorities of the Russian Federation during the upcoming G8 Summit in Sochi, Russia’s support of Small Island Developing States including US $ 500 thousand contribution towards preparation for the International Conference if SIDS in Samoa in September, 2014.
While in Barbados Ambassador also met with representatives of the business community to exchange ideas on further development of economic cooperation between the two countries, establishment of relations between business entities, promotion of Barbados as a tourist destination for Russian tourists.
