Legalization of documents

LEGALIZATION OF OFFICAL DOCUMENTS
 TO BE PRESENTED IN THE RUSSIAN FEDERATION 

Guyana is not a participant country of the Hague Convention of October 5, 1961 that cancels requirements for legalization of official documents coming from Guyanese authorities to be further presented in Russia. 

Thus for the documents to be legalized at the Embassy they should be presented first to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Guyana. 

When applying to the Embassy for legalization the following documents are required: 

1. The original of the document to be legalized with an official conclusion by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Guyana; 

2. Passport and the copy of the page with the applicants photo and personal data. 

Legalization Fees 

Method of payment - a money order payable to the Russian Embassy in Guyana or in cash. The following fees will apply:      

Attention to citizens of Barbados, Grenada, St.Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago 

In accordance with the abovementioned Convention in which the Russian Federation and Barbados, Grenada, St.Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago are participants, documents authenticated by an Apostille of a participant country are exempted from validation (i.e., from verification of the authenticity of the signatures, the authority of the persons signing, and the authenticity of the seals and stamps) by the Consular offices of other participant countries. Documents with apostilles do not require any further legalization. 

The Apostille is a stamp introduced by the Hague Convention. It is stamped on documents by a competent authority of the country in which the document was issued. 

The following documents are considered official documents in accordance with the Hague Convention (documents for public use), and an Apostille may be stamped on them: 

• Documents issued by organizations or officials associated; with courts or state tribunals, including documents issued by a public prosecutor, court secretary, or bailiff; 
• Documents of administrative (executive) authorities; 
• Documents certified by a notary public; 
• Official validating endorsements, placed on documents signed by individuals acting in a personal capacity, such as official certificates of the registration of a document or of its existence on the date indicated, as well as official and notary verification of signatures. 

The Hague Convention does not refer to: 

• Documents issued by diplomatic missions or consular offices; 
• Documents of administrative authorities that have direct bearing on commercial transactions or customs operations.

CERTIFICATION OF CORRECT TRANSLATION OF DOCUMENTS 

According to the practice, official organizations in the Russian Federation may not accept a foreign document if it is not accompanied by a certified translation legalized by a consular office of the Russian Federation in the country of origin of the document. 

Consul authenticates the translation of a document from one language into another. 

The full text of the document is to be translated into Russian or English and signed by a certified translator. Consul verifies the translation and attaches a seal to the bound together the original document and its translation in a way acceptable in the Russian Federation. 

When applying to the Embassy the following documents are required: 

1. The original of the document and its translation, signed by the certified translator. 

2. Passport and the copy of the page with the applicant’s photo and personal data.
